Canada's Food Island Adventure

Let's go on a delicious, culinary adventure..

......Whether you have been following along on my social media journey since 2011 or have just recently joined the House of Moda fan base, you have probably sensed that I am a B I G foodie; it’s in my blood. Being of Mediterranean descent, food is a central part of my culture.

My family and I talk about what we will be having for lunch while sitting at the breakfast table; the conversations about food are endless. Even now, as I write this, I am reminded of the feeling of when late afternoon hits, and tea & pastries are being served. I am reminded of how this event happened almost daily at my grandmother’s house when I was growing up. I spent so much time there while my parents worked, which likely explains why I am such an old soul in many ways and live for three-hour-long brunches with non-stop chatter and laughter that add years to your life; when I am there, I am completely in my element. That’s probably why my interest in food is so essential to my sense of self, and is most certainly why I am writing about one of my most recent adventures...

At the end of September, I took a trip to Prince Edward Island (PEI) after being invited to a weekend of gourmet experiences that included celebrity chefs and dining on local food, and what a delight it was! Originally, Doug and I were supposed to go away for a weekend during the Fall Flavours Festival for By the Sea, Under The Harvest Moon, but the event got cancelled due to COVID (not an uncommon thing these days, unfortunately). BUT, there’s always next year, right? I am hopeful that we will be in attendance next fall - who wants to join us?! In the meantime, we decided to create our own food-filled itinerary for the weekend in PEI; and am I ever glad that we did.
......
After driving over the Confederation Bridge, with the vast and expansive Northumberland Strait below, we made our way onto PEI, and found ourselves in gorgeous Charlottetown. Here, we checked into the beautiful, historic Great George Hotel in the heart of the downtown. If you’ve never been before, let me describe it to you... The Great George is a boutique hotel, consisting of a series of heritage homes covering a city block. Each home is lovely and unique. If you are hoping to experience the Charlottetown food scene, I highly recommend this charming hotel to fully immerse yourself in all of the culinary ventures; it is in an excellent location and is in walking distance to, well, essentially everywhere!

After our check-in, we jumped into our pre arranged car service to head off on an amazing adventure to experience the Inn at Bay Fortune with the famous Chef Michael Smith. Our hour-long drive had us bursting with anticipation. We finally arrived at the Fireworks Feast, and let me tell you, it was THE most amazing experience. My hubby and I were so blown away by it that we haven’t stopped talking about it; we cannot wait to go back and stay at the Inn this time - most definitely a bucket list item for us now.

We were greeted and given a tour of the farm while sipping delicious drinks when we got there; this is where we learned about the grounds, the herb gardens, and so much more. We then headed over to the legendary Oyster Rock. This was one of my favorite moments from the entire weekend. There are food stations, including fresh from-the-bay oysters, and drink stations at the top of the hill, including a Farm Bar. Oh take me back!

From smoked salmon to tacos, and everything in between, the food was divine; I think the meat kebabs were definitely our favorite though! I am hungry now as I think about it. Not only was there food galore, there was a champagne sabrage ceremony led by Michael Smith himself - so cool! Once that was completed, we went inside for the most grand feast of all, and I’m not sure if my words can fully describe this part of the experience; I think that this is something you need to experience for yourself. I can say with certainty, though, if you get the opportunity to go, you will be blown away by the show, the presentation, the pairings, and the flavours. This beautiful evening ended with toasting marshmallows around an open fire. What a night!

The next morning, we woke up and headed down to Slaymaker & Nichols for brunch, which had been recommended by many people. The story behind this place is something you need to read about (Read the story here). The menu was spectacular - hands down, one of the best brunch menus I’ve seen in the Maritimes. I had to order the Turkish Eggs on Toast, of course, and they were absolutely spectacular.

After brunch, we strolled through beautiful downtown Charlottetown, as it was a gorgeous fall day. Some of my favorite places to check out were Cool as a Moose, The Anne of Green Gables Store, Isla Clothing (loved everything there and hint hint, this is where you can buy House of Moda jewels on the island as well), Kent Street Market, and Luxury Market Consignment Boutique (probably one of the best consignment boutiques with so many great brand name and style options - I would have spent the entire day there if I could have, but I had to think of poor Dougie too haha).
......
After we explored the sights, went back to our room, changed into our comfiest clothes because it was time to cycle around the city. What am I talking about? The Solar Bikes, of course!
.......
.......
It was another adventure I’ve been waiting for; beer & bubbles on a bike! This activity was just so fun. It consists of a 2.5 hr bike ride through downtown Charlottetown where you pedal your way to pubs and patios, have a drink on the way, and have snacks at each stop. It was the best scenic tour, we made lots of new friends, and we had a great tour guide — highly recommend!
........
After we peddled our way through the day, we ended the evening off with a romantic dinner at Claddagh Oyster House, where we dined on local oysters, aged PEI beef, and delicious wine. We took a long after dinner throughout the downtown, the fall air lightly breathing life into the beautiful night, and slowly made our way back to our hotel room; the perfect end to the perfect day.

On Sunday, we woke up to a rainy, but still beautiful, morning. We found our way to the hotel restaurant for breakfast. As we wandered over, I was struck by just how stunning both the lobby and common area of the Great George are; if you ever have the chance to stay there - and I highly recommend that you do - I think you will be struck by the historic decor & intricate detailing of the hotel.
 .........
We had deep sea fishing planned for the day, but got the call that it was cancelled due to weather. We decided to make the best of it and took a trip to North Rustico Harbour to check out the most famous Blue Mussel Cafe. We were told this would be the most authentic PEI dining experience and I feel like this was true; wow, we loved it. The Seafood Bubbly Bake is a house recipe established in 1994 and was so yummy, as was the Pan-Fried Haddock. To top it off, we had homemade Apple Crumble and - wait for it - The Chocolate Potato Cake!!! Yes! It was so delicious and no you don’t taste the potato at all. Such a unique and palate pleasing experience. This is a place where we had a lovely chat with the locals and got to learn some really neat information about the area. One tip if you decide to go: they don’t take reservations, but you can check wait times online and get your name on the list when you get there. In the meantime, you can take a nice, long walk on the beach.

When we left the Blue Mussel Cafe, we took a scenic drive along the PEI National Park and through Cavendish, checked some local shops, and came back to Charlottetown. As we digested, we thought about where we would head off to for our Sunday evening dinner. Enter Sim’s Corner Steakhouse and Oyster Bar. This spot is an authentic Steakhouse. It has a gorgeous atmosphere, lovely service, and mouth watering food. As always, Doug and I had Oysters again, of course, and the Crusted Filet Mignon. So. Good. We nibbled on some other recommendations from our server, which I loved; they were just so knowledgeable! I really enjoy when our servers recommend things to be honest. I always love to try new things, and all of the recommendations were five star.

Monday morning, we went on a church tour and visited St. Dustin’s Basilica, took in the city, and enjoyed the beautiful weather before having to return home. Our little slice of Heaven was coming to an end, but both Doug and I agreed that we were filled with so much gratitude for the experience. It was refreshing to experience a new place, one not too far from home, and to get a taste of Maritime culture and PEI flare. Being able to try local cuisine, meet new faces, and take in those final days by the shore before the East Coast winter sets in was exactly what our spirits needed. It was a welcomed experience, a weekend we won’t soon forget, and one that we urge you to book the future. Your heart, soul, and stomach will thank you ♥️ Until next time PEI, we love you.
